  • Newton rallies in second game for win

    The Newton Junior Knights keep splitting with the Salina teams, trading wins in a twinbill Friday at Klein-Scott Field against the Salina Hawks.
    Salina won the first game 13-5 in five innings on the eight-run rule. In the second game, Newton scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 8-4.
    In the first game, Salina scored two runs in the first inning, three runs in the third and eight in the fourth. Newton had four errors in the fourth inning.
    Newton broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth when Drake Sturgeon hit an RBI triple and scored on a Chazz Martinez single. Newton added three more runs aided by errors.
    Collin Blackim led Salina at the plate, going two for four with four RBIs. Nick Shaffer went two for three.
    Salina pitcher Justin McCartney went the distance for the win.
    Newton starter Garrett Davis took the loss. Martinez closed out the game. Drake Sturgeon finished two for three hitting.
    In the second game, Salina scored in the second inning when Zane Heigele tripled and came home on a wild pitch. Jacob Pengra hit an RBI single in the third inning. Salina added a run in the fourth inning.
    Newton scored in the bottom of the fourth when Drake Sturgeon singled, went two bases on wild pitches and scored on a Brennan Barger single.
    In the bottom of the sixth, Newton drew five walks, two hit batters, four wild pitches and just one hit, scoring seven runs. Salina used four pitchers in the inning.
    With two outs in the top of the seventh, Pengra hit an RBI double, but a pop fly to short ended the game.
    Brogan Owens went the distance for Newton to get the win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
    Colt England went five innings for Salina in a no-decision, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Sam Mermis took the loss.
    Barger finished two for three hitting for Newton. Pengra went three for four hitting for Salina.
    Newton plays 6 p.m. Monday at McPherson at the Grant Sports Complex.
    SENIOR KNIGHTS — The Newton Senior Knights opened play in the McPherson Invitational with a 10-1 win over Buhler.
    Peyton Dahl pitched for the win for Newton. Dakota Long had two doubles and three RBs. Tucker Sweely hit two doubles with two runs scored. Gunar Drinnen hit a three-run home run.
    Newton plays at 11 a.m. today against Junction City and at 4 p.m. against Nickerson. Wyatt Burbrink and Jacob Fulmer are slated to start tomorrow. If Newton finishes in the top four in pool play, Newton advances to bracket play Monday.
