    out Dawgs
    VALLEY CENTER — The Newton Rebels won its second straight game in Walter Johnson League play, edging out the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs 4-3 Thursday in Valley Center.
    Newton jumped out 3-0 in the first two innings and held on for its first win of the year over Valley Center.
    Toby Cornejo led the Rebel offense with three hits in two at bats, driving in a run. Cornejo drove in a run. Justin Harris went two for four.
    Chris Pinne, Evan Thomas and Connor Ross each added an RBI.
    For Valley Center at the plate, Zach Stucky went four for four. Jerrik Sigg went three for five. Tory Bell drove in two runs.
    Josh Markle went the distance for Newton, allowing 11 hits and striking out nine with no walks.
    Newton improves to 12-8, 11-8 in WJL play. Newton plays at 7:30 p.m. today at Hutchinson.

    The Newton 11- and 12-year old Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball team fell to Rose Hill 3 10-9 June 11 in Newton.
    Peyton Hedrick had two RBIs and a hit in the game. Jake Strohl went two for two hitting. Dustin Todd had an RBI double.
    Caleb Lynch went the distance pitching for Newton, striking out the side in the third inning. Eli Regier picked off a runner after catching a fly ball for a double play. Xavier Lester fielded a ball at catcher on a throw from Lynch for a play at the plate.
    Wingnuts win
    at Sioux City
    SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Wichita Wingnuts opened a four-game road trip to Sioux City with a 5-3 win in American Association play at Lewis and Clark Park.
    Wichita scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead.
    Justin Klipp went six innings for the win, striking out three. Josh Dew pitched the final out for the save. Andy Noga took the loss for Sioux City.
    Abel Nieves and Jared McDonald each went two for four for Wichita. Jake Kahaulelio and Ryan Khoury each drove in two runs. Kahaulelio hit a home run.
    Leugim Barraso went two for four for the Explorers.
    The series continues at 7:05 p.m. today.
