The Newton Junior Knights took their second straight doubleheader split against a Salina team, splitting against the Salina Eagles Thursday night at Klein-Scott Field.
Newton overcame a five-run deficit in the first game to post an 8-7 win. Salina won the second game 11-5 in a game called after six innings due to time constraints.
In the first game, Salina scored four runs in the first inning and two more in the third. Newton scored a run in the second and one in the third, tying the game with four runs in the fourth.
The Eagles regained the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Drake Sturgeon led off with a walk, followed by a Jack Kingsley steal. Brennen Barger reached base on a fielder's choice. Two runs scored on a Brogan Owens single.
Chaz Martinez finished two for three hitting. Jack Kingsley went two for four.
Cole Koerner started for Newton. Freddie Loeffler took over in the fifth for the win.
In the second game, Newton jumped ahead 4-1 through four innings, but walks, errors and hits late in the inning allowed Salina to score seven runs. The Eagles added three more runs in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth.
Newton put runners on the corner with one out, scoring a run on a Cole Sturgeon single. A double play ended the game.
Jack Kingsley started for Newton. Loeffler took the loss and Chazz Martinez finished the game.
Cole Sturgeon went three for four hitting for Newton. Drake Sturgeon went two for four. Barger went two for three.
Newton hosts the Salina Hawks at 6 p.m. today at Klein-Scott Field.
