The Newton Dirtbaggers 9-year old baseball team downed Whitewater 11-9 Monday to improve to 10-0-1 in league play.

Luke Hirsh and Joe Slechta pitched. Slechta went two for two hitting, driving in three runs. Ben Crawford and Owen Mick each scored two runs.

The Dirtbaggers finished 1-2 at the McPherson Tournament last weekend. Newton lost to Canton-Galva and Concordia, but beat Buhler 14-1. Cade Valdez pitched in the Buhler game. Crawford and Slechta each had two hits. Hirsh and Revel each scored two runs. Caleb Koontz was named the offensive star. Valdez was named the defensive star.

The Newton 11- and 12-year-old Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball team finished 1-1 in recent play.

June 11, Newton downed Derby 16-4. Corbyn Basgall had a pair of two-run hits in the game. Jack Strohl struck out six batters. Mario Martinez and Eli Regier combined on a double play.

June 15, Newton lost to Belle Plaine 15-5. Martinez struck out five and Jack Strohl struck out two. Xavier Lester and Caleb Lynch were cited for catches on defense.

Dylan Vajnar had a bunt single. Dustin Todd and Strohl each reached base in the game.

Hinson sets

new K record

WICHITA — Wichita Wingnuts pitcher Ryan Hinson became the team's all-time leader in strikeouts with 219, getting five in eight innings of work in a 7-1 win over the Gary SouthShore Railcats Wednesday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Hinson gave up a run on five hits with two walks. Andrew Aizenstadt struck out two batters in the ninth to finish the game. He was signed prior to the game.

Aizenstadt started the season with Wichita, playing 10 games. He was then sold to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he pitched seven game for Lakewood in the South Atlantic League.

The Wichita offense was led by C.J. Ziegler, who had two home runs in four at bats, driving in three runs. Jake Kahaulelio went two for four with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Ryan Khoury and Brent Clevlen each added an RBI.

Brian Kolb went two for four for Gary. Ari Ronnick took the loss pitching.

Wichita, 21-12, opens a four-game road trip to Sioux City at 7:05 p.m. today.
