split with Hawks
SALINA — The Newton Junior Knights split a doubleheader against the Salina Hawks Friday in Class A American Legion baseball play at Dean Evans Stadium.
Newton won the first game 20-4 in four innings on the 10-run rule, but lost the second game 18-13. The second game clocked in at just over three hours.
In the first game, Newton scored five runs in the second, six runs in the third and nine runs in the fourth.
Cole Sturgeon drove in three runs. Brogan Owens went three for three hitting with two RBIs. Reagan McCloud and Brennan Barger each went two for three with two RBIs. Jordan Palmer also drove in two runs. Drake Sturgeon went two for four hitting.
Bryce Vannoy had two RBIs for Salina. Jacob Pengra and Colim Blackim each went two for three. Blackim and Justin McCartney each drove in a run.
Cole Koerner went 2 2-3 innings for the win for Newton, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Chazz Martinez finished the game, allowing two hits.
Jordan McMillen took the loss for the Hawks. Kale Stover and Sam Mermis also pitched.
In the second game, Newton led 11-9 after four innings, but gave up four runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth. Newton managed just two runs total in those two innings.
Pengra and Cedric Salas each drove in four runs for Salina. Pengra was three for four hitting. Nick Shaffer drove in two runs.
For Newton, Koerner went three for four with two RBIs. Cole Sturgeon went three for five with two RBIs. Brogan Owens went two for two with two RBIs. McCloud had two hits and an RBI. Drake Sturgeon, Kyler Sweely and Palmer each added an RBI.
McCartney pitched the win for Salina. Owens took the loss.
Newton hosts the Salina Eagles at 6 p.m. Thursday.

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts split a doubleheader Friday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in American Association play against the St. Paul Saints in a battle of division leaders.
In the first game, Wichita scored six runs in the bottom of the third for a 7-2 win. In the second game, St. Paul scored three runs in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 win.
Page 2 of 2 - In the first game, Ryan Hinson went the distance for the win, allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. John Rodriguez and C.J. Ziegler had back-to-back home runs in the third innings. Rodriguez hit a two-run shot.
Brandon Tripp hit a two-run shot for the Saints.
In the second game, Mark Hamburger went 6 2-3 innings for the win, striking out five. Matt Meyer pitched the final out for the save. Nick Walters took the loss for Wichita.
Ryan Khoury and David Amberson each went two for three for Wichita with an RBI. Tripp drove in one run and Adam Frost drove in two runs for St. Paul.
The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
