TOPEKA — Jake Wodtke and Ryan Ihle hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Topeka Golden Giants to a 7-6 win over the Newton Rebels Friday in Walter Johnson League play at Lake Shawnee Park in Topeka.
Newton jumped to a 4-1 lead through 4 1/2 innings, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Newton came back with a run each in the sixth and seventh innings to regain the lead.
Newton was led by Toby Cornejo, who went two for four hitting with two RBIs. Nick Kolley went two for four with an RBI. Cooper Langley hit a home run for the Rebels.
For Topeka, Lance Barkley had two RBIs. Wodtke went three for five hitting. Brooks DeBord went two for three with an RBI. Connor Crimmins went two for four with an RBI.
Newton pitcher Craig Bastert went five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Connor Law took the loss, pitching three innings and striking out two.
For Topeka, starter Colin Toalson went seven innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Cameron Toalson went 1 1-3 innings, allowing a hit, two walks and a strikeout. Bryan Kloppe finished the game for the win.
With two games remaining in the WJL season series, Newton and Topeka have split four games.
Topeka is 10-6, 7-5 in WJL play.
Newton is 10-4, 9-4 in WJL play. Newton hosts Valley Center at 7 p.m. today and Sunday at Klein-Scott Field.
