  • MAIZE — The Newton Rebels baseball team gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to fall to the Wichita Aviators 3-2 Wednesday in Walter Johnson League play at the Maize High School field.
    Jake Baxter put Wichita ahead with a one out, two run double.
    Newton scored a run in the top of the first and another in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Wichita came back with a run in the sixth.
    Cooper Langley went two for three hitting for Newton with tan RBI. Gene Nanney went two for four with an RBI. Toby Cornejo went two for four hitting.
    Nolan Fisher went two for four hitting for Wichita.
    Travis Levitt pitched for the win for Wichita in relief.
    Newton's Josh Markel took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Newton High grad Nathan Briar went two innings, allowing a hit and striking out two.
    Newton falls to 9-3, 8-3 in Walter Johnson League play, and hosts the Hutchinson Monarchs at 7 p.m. today at Klein-Scott Field.
