A pair of Newton High School spring graduates have signed a letter of intent to play at Kansas City (Kan.) Community College beginning in the fall. Signed were Lane Pauls and Dalton Ayers. Ayers was a two-year letterwinner for Newton, transferring to Newton as a junior from Wichita Northwest. He was a second-team All-Wichita City League selection as a sophomore. As a junior at Newton, he qualified for state with a fifth-place regional finished and took 12th at the Class 5A state tournament. As a senior at Newton, he was a second-team All-Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I selection and qualified for state by taking 10th at regionals. Pauls was a four-year letterwinner for the Railers and a three-year state qualifier, finishing fifth, third and sixth at regionals respectively. Pauls was a four-time All-AV-CTL selection. He was second-team All-Division II as a freshman, second-team All-Division I as a sophomore, first-team All-Division I as a junior and second-team All-Division I as a senior. He won the AV-CTL I individual title as a junior. As a senior, he won individual titles at the Salina Central Invitational and Swather Special. KCKCC, under coach Gary Shrader, finished sixth in the Jayhawk Conference this season and 10th in NJCAA District III play.
