  • Rebels finish road trip 3-2

  • MAIZE — The Newton Rebels suffered its first losses of the season, but still finished a five-game road stand 3-2. Saturday at Hutchinson, Newton lost its first game of the season 5-4. Sunday at Topeka, Newton won the first game 2-1, but lost the second game 6-5 in nine innings of a game scheduled for seven. Monday against the Wichita Aviators at Maize, Newton jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first two innings and held on for a 9-3 win. Saturday, Newton fell behind to Hutchinson 4-0 in the first two innings. Newton came back with two runs in the seventh, but Hutchinson scored a run in the eighth and survived a Rebel two-run comeback in the ninth. For Newton, Justin Harris was two for three hitting with three RBIs. Hutchinson starter Junior Mustain had the win, allowing a hit in six innings with eight strikeouts. Craig Bastert took the loss for Newton. In Sunday's first game against Topeka, Ethan Peacock went the distance, allowing a run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Newton scored a run in the third and another in the sixth. Topeka scored in the bottom of the seventh. Conner Murray took the loss for the Giants, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Cooper Langley had Newton's sole RBI. Jake Ek went two for three for Topeka. Ryan Ihle drove in a run. In the second game against Topeka, Newton jumped out 3-0, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the second. Newton regained the lead with two runs in the fourth, but Topeka scored a run in the fifth and another in the seventh. Ek drove in three runs for Topeka. Connor Crimmins and Michael Morales each added an RBI. Ihle went two for four hitting. For Newton, Toby Cornejo drove in two runs. Anthony Quiles, Langley and Harris each added an RBI. Harris went two for four hitting. Against the Wichita Aviators, Langley went two for four hitting with three RBIs. Ben Coudret went two for three with two RBIs. Nick Kolley drove in two runs. Gene Nanney and Storm Marlar each drove in a run. Ty Geary threw two innings of relief for Topeka for the win. Nathan Briar went 3 1-3 innings for Newton, taking the loss. Newton, 9-2, plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday against the Aviators at Maize High School.
