It was an all-Tulsa final in the eighth-grade boys' division of the Mid America Youth Basketball Summer Kickoff Tournament Sunday at Ravenscroft Gym. The Tulsa Wildcats took on the Tulsa Titans in the A bracket finals. Fewer turnovers and fresher legs down the stretch proved to be the difference for the Wildcats, which won 48-32. "We played pretty good defense," Wildcats coach Jeff Fox said. "All nine of our players contributed. I think defense was the main key throughout the tournament. We played great team defense and shared the ball on offense." Will Fiser led the Wildcats with 18 points, followed by Ethan Chargois with 12. The Titans were led by Marcus Mays with seven points and Dovell Battle with six. Up 4-3 early in the game, the Wildcats made a 14-2 run. The Wildcats led 23-12 at the half. The Titans got no closer than 10 points in the second half. The Wildcats made another run late in the game. "We used to play them a lot, but we haven't played them in two years," Fox said. "We knew they wanted to drive the ball to the rim. We stayed in a zone to stop their penetration. They didn't shoot the ball well from the size and we rebounded pretty well." Most of the Wildcats play for Jinks, Union, Bixby and Holland Hall and Sand Springs in the Tulsa area. "These kids have all played together since the third grade," Fox said. "They've been together for about five years. All that work has paid off with a tournament like this." Fox said the team has played up in the freshman division most of the summer season. He said this was about the sixth tournament the team has won. "We'll come up here for nationals," Fox said. "That will be our next big tournament. "We really enjoy playing in Newton. One of the biggest things for us is eating at the Breadbasket." All but one of the Titan players are from Tulsa. The other is from Berryhill, a suburb.
