  • Senior Knights down Buhler
    HUTCHINSON — The Newton Senior Knights opened play in the Hutchinson Wood Bat Classic with a 13-3 win over Buhler at Hobart-Detter Field. The game was called after five innings on the run rule. Newton broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Knights scored in all but one inning. Wyatt Burbrink went the distance for the Knights, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk, two hit batters and four strikeouts. Gunar Drinnen went two for four hitting with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Austin Resser drove in two runs and scored two runs. Dakota Stein had two RBIs and a run scored. Keil Stauffer scored two runs. Tucker Sweely scored two runs with an RBI. Peyton Dahl, Ben Wright and Nathan Wood each had a run scored and an RBI. Newton is 6-2 and plays at 10:30 a.m. today at Rice Park against the Butler County Cubs 18s and at 6:30 p.m. today at Hobart-Detter Field against the Wichita Grays. Newton ends pool play at 8 a.m. Saturday at Rice Park against Maize South. Medal games are Sunday.

    Wingnuts sweep El Paso Diablos
    WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts closed out a three-game sweep of the El Paso Diablos with a 1-0 win Thursday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wichita scored in the bottom of the fifth when Jared McDonald reached base on a two-out ground-rule double. Ryan Khoury followed with a single to score McDonald. Khoury finished the game two for four. For El Paso, Mitch Einertson and Roberto Ramirez each went two for four hitting. Wichita starter Jon Link, 4-1, went 6 2-3 innings for the win, allowing six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Nick Walters, Lincoln Holdzkom and Josh Dew all finished the game. Dew pitched the ninth for the save, his fourth of the season. David Casillas, 1-3, took the loss for El Paso, allowing five hits, four walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings. Wichita is 14-6. El Paso falls to 5-14. The Wingnuts play at 7:05 p.m. today at St. Paul.
