  • Senior Knights split games
HUTCHINSON — The Newton Senior Knights split a pair of games Friday in the Hutchinson Classic Wood Bat Tournament. In the first game, Newton pitcher Ben Wright lost a one-hitter to the Butler County Cubs Elite team 1-0. Wright struck out seven, giving up four walks with two hit batters. The sole Cubs hit was an RBI hit in the third inning. Wyatt Burbrink, Nathan Wood and Gunar Drinnen each had a hit in the game. Newton stranded several runners, while several were picked off. Newton had a runner thrown out at home on a suicide suqeeze bunt attempt. In the second game of the day, the Knights downed the Wichita Grays junior team 15-0 in three innings. Newton took a 6-0 lead and scored nine runs in the third inning to put it away. Peyton Dahl went the distance for the Knights, allowing two hits and four strikeouts. Keil Stauffer was two for three hitting for Newton in the second game. Tucker Sweely hit a triple. "In the first game, Ben Wright had a decent performance," Newton manager Andy Preston said. "He had a two-out change up he'd like to take back. We needed to change our approach at the plate. We needed to make adjustments and find a way to push runners across. We faced a good pitcher, but we left too many runners stranded. I was happy with the way we came back in the second game. Everybody got on base. We didn't get a lot of hits, but we put a lot of balls in play. We competed well and represented well." Newton is 7-3, 2-1 in tournament play. Newton ends pool play at 8 a.m. today against Maize South. Medal play is Monday.
