  • Bethel player?takes honors

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bethel College freshman tennis player Bree Honer was named an honorable mention All-American by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for the 2012-13 season.?Honer, of Shawnee, was player of the year and freshman of the year in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. She also was a first-team All-KCAC team.?She helped lead Bethel to a 13-4 record and a KCAC regular-season title.?Bethel assistant coach Sam Gaeddert was named Central Region assistant coach of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the NAIA level.

    Halstead grad?8th at nationals

    HUTCHINSON — Halstead High School grad Dakota Becker placed eighth in the pole vault Saturday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson.?Becker, a sophomore at Hutchinson Community College, cleared 4.35 meters (14-3 1/4).?Pau Tonnesen of Mesa Community College won the event at 4.95 meters (16-2 3/4).?Hutchinson finished fourth in the team standings with 49 points. South Plains Community College won the title with 140 points, followed by Iowa Central with 103 points and West Texas College at 52 points.

    Bethel golfer?takes award

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bethel College golfer Abram Rodenberg was named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete for the 2012-13 season.?Rodenberg is a senior from Halstead.?To receive the award, an athlete must be at least a junior with a grade-point-average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and nominated by the school's head coach or sports information director.?There were 111 men's golfers named to the team.

    GARY, Ind. — The Wichita Wingnuts opened a series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats with a 5-1 loss in Gary.?Gary pitcher Alain Quijano went six innings for the win, allowing five hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Three other pitchers finished the game.?Wichita's Kristhiam Linares took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings.?Adam Klein drove in two runs for Gary. Cristian Guerrero went two for three hitting with an RBI. Drew Martinez went two for four.?For Wichita, Ryan Khoury went three for five, John Rodriguez went two for four with an RBI.?Both teams are 3-2 and meet again at 11:10 a.m. today.
