State swimming to be netcast
The Kansas State High School Activities Association will webcast the Class 6A and 5-4-3-2-1A state swimming and diving championships today and Saturday. The webcasts are free and available at kshsaa.playonsports.com. Newton High School has 11 competitors in the Class 5-4-3-2-1A state swimming meet, which begins at 4 p.m. today. The finals are at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Newton native places in hammer
HUTCHINSON — Joseph Talbert of Newton placed sixth in the hammer throw Thursday at the National Junior College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at Gowan Stadium in Hutchinson. Talbert, a sophomore at Hutchinson Community College, had a throw of 166-6, which also was sixth best in school history.
Wingnuts win season opener
WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts opened the 2013 season with an 8-0 win over the rival Kansas City T-Bones Thursday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wichita pitcher Jon Link pitched seven innings for the win, allowing three hits with four strikeouts. Lincoln Holdzkom and Tyler White finished the game, allowing two hits and a walk in the final two innings. Jake Kahaulelio had four hits for Wichita in four trips to the plate, hitting a home run, driving in four runs and scoring three runs. C.J. Ziegler went two for five with a home run and three RBIs. Shaun Garceau took the loss for the T-Bones. The Wingnuts retired uniform no. 3 before the game in honor of bench coach Brian Rose, who died Jan. 31. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
