Newton falls to Ark City

ANDOVER The Newton High School softball team ended the season with an 8-3 loss to Arkansas City Wednesday in the semifinals of the Class 5A regionals in Andover. Newton scored a run in the top of the first. The Bulldogs came back to tie the game in the second inning. Newton briefly regained the lead with two runs in the top of the third, but Ark City answered with two runs of its own. The Bulldogs scored five unanswered runs in the remaining innings. Newton ends the season 3-18. Ark City lost in the finals to Andover Central 6-3, ending the season 11-9.

Wildcats topped by Sterling

GALVA The Moundridge High School softball team fell in the Class 2-1A regional finals to Sterling 8-4 Tuesday in Galva. Moundridge drew a first-round bye, and downed Heart of America League rival Canton-Galva 8-3 in the semifinals. Sterling, 11-11, advances to state next week in Emporia. Moundridge ends the season 10-10.

Schedule set for Districts

HESSTON The Hesston College baseball team opens play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Plains District baseball tournament at 10 a.m. Friday in Tishomingo, Okla. Hesston, 26-16, opens against Metropolitan Community College-Longview, 31-8. Hesston plays host Murray State College, 40-19, at 1 p.m. Friday.

Games continue Saturday.

Wild players claim honors

LAWRENCE Wichita Wild players Kendrick Harper and Tywon Hubbard were named Champions Professional Indoor Football League players of the week for week 10 of the regular season. Harper was named defensive player of the week. Hubbard was named special teams player of the week. Harper had three interceptions and three tackles in a 45-40 win over the Salina Bombers. Harper's interceptions sets a new single-game record for the first-year league. Harper has 10 interceptions for the season. Hubbard had 190 yards total in kickoff and missed field goal returns. He had a 57-yard missed field goal return. The Wild clinched a playoff spot with the win. Wichita is 9-1 and is off this week.

Swimming corrections

In Tuesday's Kansan's story on the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I swimming meet, the team of The team of Katrina Gerbrand, Hana Robinson, Emily O'Meara and Emilie Holler took second in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:04.62, Holler finished third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.79 and Jessi Stucky's time in the 100-yard breaststroke was 1:21.24.
