  • Swathers fall in finals
    TOWANDA — The Hesston High School softball team reached the Class 4A regional finals, but lost to unbeaten Augusta 7-3 Tuesday in Towanda. In Monday's quarterfinals, the Swathers downed Wichita Trinity Academy 15-2. In the semifinals, Hesston edged defending Class 4A state champion Andale-Garden Plain 2-1. In the finals, Hesston jumped to a 3-0 lead through the first two innings. Augusta came back with six runs, aided by three walks, a sacrifice fly, two hits and two errors. Brooke Eberhardt posted the win pitching for Augusta, 21-0. Hesston ends the season 10-10.
    Area teams drop 3A games
    HILLSBORO — The Halstead and Sedgwick softball teams each were eliminated from Class 3A regional play Monday in Hillsboro. Halstead lost in the quarterfinals to Hillsboro 15-0, ending the season 2-16. Sedgwick lost in the quarterfinals to Haven 18-3, ending the season 3-13.
    Sedgwick falls in Class 3A finals
    LEON — The Sedgwick Cardinal baseball team fell to Wichita Independent 15-5 Tuesday in the Class 3A regional finals in Leon. Sedgwick opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over host Leon-Bluestem in the semifinals. Independent, 19-1, advances to the state tournament in Manhattan. Sedgwick ends the season 16-2.
    Halstead golfers second at regionals
    CHENEY — The Halstead High School golf team is headed to state after a second-place finish at the Class 3A regional tournament Monday at the Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney. Cheney won the tournament with a team score of 323. Halstead was second at 352, edging Wichita Independent for the second state berth by two strokes. Michah Dehning of Cheney was the top medalist at 78, followed by teammate Jared Giefer in second, one stroke back. Halstead had two medalists — Nathan Gamache in fourth at 80 and Taylor Nemeth in fifth at 83. Cody Armendariz shot a 91, followed by Blake Bohling at 98, Alex Thibault at 104 and Brendan Gundy at 115. Remington was sixth at 369, led by Alex Carr at 90. Sedgwick was ninth at 470, led by Trent Deckard at 110. The state meet is Monday at the Spring Creek Golf Course in Seneca.
