HILLSBORO — The Halstead High School baseball team fell a run short of a trip to state, falling to Marion 9-8 Tuesday in the finals of the Class 3A regional tournament in Hillsboro. Halstead reached the finals by knocking off top-seeded Southeast of Saline 7-3 in the semifinals. Halstead led 8-6 after six innings, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Halstead's Joseph Stovall went two for three hitting for Halstead with three RBIs. Shane VanSteenburg went three for four with two runs scored. Daniel Ratzlaff went two for two with an RBI. Blake Beckett added two RBIs. Sean Boston drove in a run. Beckett took the loss for Halstead in relief of VanSteenburg. Marion, 15-5, advances to the state tournament next week in Manhattan. The Warriors avenge a sweep at the hands of Halstead last week. In the semifinals, Halstead scored three runs in the first inning en route to a 4-3 lead after two innings. The Dragons put things away with four runs in the top of the seventh. Stovall went two for five hitting with three RBIs. Beckett went two for four hitting with two RBIs. Jerry Black went three for three hitting. Devan Herb, Dylan Ratzlaff and Boston each added an RBI. Stovall pitched 5 1-3 innings of relief for the win, allowing no runs, six hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Boston started for Halstead. The Dragons end the season 8-13 and lose two seniors.
