  • Newton boys win eighth-straight title

  • MAIZE — The Newton High School boys' track team made it eight league championships in a row and 11 overall, winning the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships Friday at K.T. Woodman Stadium in Maize. Newton edged Derby 115-100 for the league title. Maize was third at 99, followed by Salina South at 93, Hutchinson at 60, Campus at 48 and Salina Central at 43. The Maize girls edged Newton for the title 145-130. Derby was third at 101, followed by Salina Central at 82, Hutchinson at 44, Campus at 28 and Salina South at 27. The Railer boys swept the shot put competition. Cory Martens won in 55-4, followed by Colton Pfannenstiel in second in 48-0 1/2 and Joseph McConnell in third in 46-10 1/2. Martens set a meet record. Martens took second in the discus in 156-10. The 4x800-meter relay team won in 8:39.46. Ty Voth took second in the javelin at 159-4. Dylan Moore took second in the 800-meter run in 2:05.91, followed by Ryan Stuchlik in third in 2:05.94. Matt Willis took second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.08 and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 40.46. Austin Krogmeier took third in the high jump in 5-10. Peter Nelson took third in the long jump in 20-11 1/2. Newton took third in the 4x100-meter relay in 44.03 and fourth in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:33.55. Mark Kreider took fourth in the 1,600-meter run in 4:40.14. For the Newton girls, freshman Payton Roberts won the shot put in 41-5, a new meet record, followed by Brooke Regier in second in 37-5. Regier won the discus in 128-0, followed by Roberts i fourth in 107-3. Larissa Espinoza won the triple jump in 33-8 1/2. Newton won the 4x100-meter relay in 50.73, took second in the 4x800-meter relay in 10:39.31 and took third in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:17.69. Lauren Anderson took second in the 100-meter dash in 12.91 and third in the 200-meter dash in 27.06. Casey Baldwin took second in the long jump in 15-5 1/4, followed by Anderson in third in 15-4 3/4 and Espinoza in fourth in 15-3. Andrea Baron took third in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.36. Sarah Bartel took third in the 300-meter low hurdles in 49.35. Hailey Valdez took fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.12. Kasey Stucky took fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 12:41.79. The Railers compete at the Class 5A regional meet at 2 p.m. Friday at Salina District Stadium.
