  • EMPORIA The Newton High School boys' tennis team claimed a fifth-place doubles medal and a ninth-place team finish Saturday at the Class 5A state championships in Emporia. Salina Central won the team title with 53 points, followed by Shawnee Mission South at 26, Andover at 26 (South held the tie-breaker), Great Bend at 20 and Goddard and Topeka West tied at 17. Newton scored 13 points. "Very proud of our team this year and many thanks go out to parents and supporters," Newton coach Nick Sisson said. "I look for us to be very strong next year as we return almost our entire varsity line up as well as having a strong eighth-grade class coming up." The team of Jensen Kingsley and Josh Carlgren started the day in the consolation semifinals, where they stopped Pierce Carey and Gage Kearns of Salina South 9-2. In the consolation finals, Kingsley and Carlgren downed Lincoln Blizzard and Matt Rochat of Andover 9-3 to take fifth. Carlgren is a junior and Kingsley is a sophomore. The duo ended the season 5-1 at state and 28-9 overall. "Carlgren and Kingsley were a point away from the semifinals, but ended up losing to the second seed," Newton coach Nick Sisson said. "They showed tremendous resolve and won three matches in a row to take fifth place and go 5-1 in the tournament. They convincingly won their last two matches of the tournament over teams who had previously beat them this season." Yannick Rave of Newton finished 2-2 in singles play Friday, failing to move on to the medal rounds.
