WICHITA — The Hesston High School boys' tennis team claimed three medals, but was nudged off the stand for a team trophy Saturday at the Class 4A state tournament at Wichita Collegiate. Host Collegiate won the meet with 42 points, followed by Topeka Hayden at 35 and McPherson at 32. Hesston scored 28 points to finish fourth. "This was a fun state tournament," Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. "The quality of play was great and the team race was close, which made every match important. Like they have all year, our kids competed hard in each match. This has been a remarkable year. In 12 varsity matches, the team finished first seven times, inlcuding CKL and regionals, second four times and fourth at state. "The team grew very close as the year progressed and pulled together in a very special way. I enjoyed coaching this group immensely. I will miss our seniors, but look forward to next spring as we have great experience coming back." In singles play, sophomore Collin Martin and junior Keegan LeFevre faced each other in the consolation semifinals, with Martin winning 9-5. In the consolation finals, Martin lost to Sam Beren of Collegiate 9-2. In the seventh-place match, LeFevre lost to Payton Hays of Parsons 9-1. Martin ends the season 27-7. LeFevre ends the season 19-10. "Collin had a terrific tournamentm and played well the whole time," Mark Dahlsten said. "He was aggressive and beat who he should have. His losses were to two great players. Collin has medaled in both his state tournaments, and has a chance to be the first Swather to medal in four state tournaments. "Keegan showed a lot of heart during the tournament. He suffered an injury at regionals that prevented him from serving normally. He had to serve underhand, and aggravated the injury a little during play. ... He does a great job, and should look to a big senior year." Seniors Dean Dahlsten and Peter Jensen started the day in the consolation semifinals against Kaynan Anderson and Connor Kljowski of Abilene, winning 9-6. In the consolation finals, Dahlsten and Jensen fell to Max Moxley and Forrest Short of Collegiate 9-8 (7-5). Dahlsten and Jensen end the season 19-6. "Dean and Peter end fine careers with a solid performance," Mark Dahlsten said. "They were disappointed to lose to Winfield in the quarters, but bounced back on Saturday to play well. They finished 19-6 on the year, and have both been terrific players for us during their careers. Dean is the first Hesston player to play in four state tournaments and Peter played in three."
