Railer golfers fourth at regionals
ANDOVER — The Newton High School boys' golf team finished one stroke out of a state berth, finishing fourth at the Class 5A regional tournament Monday at the Terradyne Country Club in Andover. Kapaun-Mt. Carmel won the team title at 296, followed by Maize South at 306 and Andover at 316. Newton finished with a 317. "The team played great today," Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. "We posted our best score of the year and unfortunately fell one stroke short of qualifying the whole team for state. We knew it was going to be a difficult task with the depth of our regional. It hurts to get so close and fall short. I'm so proud of how the team kept grinding throughout their rounds." Sam Stevens of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel led a 1-2-3 Crusader finish, winning at 72. Nick Auer also finished with a 72, losing the tie-breaker to his teammate. Matthew Gilbaugh was third at 73. Newton did claim a pair of medalists, who will advance to state Monday at the Brookridge Golf Club in Overland Park. Senior Lane Pauls finished sixth at 75. Senior Dalton Ayers finished 10th at 77. "Lane had a great day tee to green," Joanie Pauls said. "He struggled with the greens on the front nine, but a birdie on six helped him go out in 38, despite 19 putts. On the back, after bogeys on 13 and 14, he stood six-over on his round. He played his final four holes in two-under with birdies on 16 and 18 to finish in a four-way tie for fourth with a 75. A bogey on the first playoff hole had him finish in sixth. "Dalton played really solid on the front nine. A birdie on six helped him go out in 36. On his back nine, two doubles hurt him on his closing holes, but he was able to birdie 17. His 77 was good for 10th place." Cole Rother finished with an 82, followed by Omar Ramos-Thaw at 83, Alex Rickard at 87 and Avery Anderson at 89. "Cole started on 10," Joanie Pauls said. "He had an opening triple bogey, but parred his next three holes. He went out in 45 and was very disappointed at the turn. On the front nine he turned it around and was able to improve eight strokes with a 37. Omar had an up and down round, but never quit fighting. He started on 10 and parred his first four holes. An errant tee shot on the par-three 15th led to a triple bogey, and he went out in 43. He was one under through the first six holes of the front nine. He had some trouble on the par -three eighth green and suffered his second triple on the round and came in at 40. "Alex and Avery both had some difficulty on the large, sloping greens. Alex had seven pars on his round, but also had some doubles and a triple. Avery hit the ball well, but had too many three-putts to post a great round."
