  • HC baseball team wins Region VI title

  • SALINA — The Hesston College baseball team won the National Junior College Region VI, Division II title three games to one over Brown Mackie College Monday and Tuesday in a best-of-five series. In Monday's games at Hesston, the Larks won 3-1 and 5-3. Tuesday in Salina, Brown Mackie won the first game 8-6, but the Larks rebounded to win the second game 13-5 to take the title. In game one, Hesston pitcher Brandon Kutrubs went the distance, allowing a run on five hits with four strikeouts. Nick Yoder went two for two hitting for Hesston. Preston Hornbeck and Stefon Griddine each drove in a run. Daniel Schneider went two for three hitting for Brown Mackie. Gilberto Negron drove in a run. Anthony Fuller took the loss for Brown Mackie, allowing two earned runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Tyler Shain finished the game, allowing a walk and a strikeout in an inning of work. In the second game, Brown Mackie's Bentley Corporan hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, but the Larks fought back from there, scoring a run in the first, two in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings. Hesston's Dustin King went the distance for the Larks, allowing six hits, two walks and a strikeout. Dustin Wisdom took the loss for BMC, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Corporan finished two for three htting for the Lions. Griddine went two for three for Hesston with an RBI. Hornbeck drove in three runs. Cody King added an RBI. In game three, Hesston scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the second, but gave up four in the third and four more in the sixth. Hesston did manage two runs in the top of the seventh. Tate DeGraff took the loss for Hesston in relief of Joshua Crisco and Nick Carrell. Omar Almodovar got the win for the Lions. Christian Newell pitched the final out for the save. Shawn Harrison led BMC at the plate, going two for two hitting with two runs scored and two RBIs. Negron and Gabriel Ribera each added two RBIs. Alex Chavez went two for three with an RBI. For Hesston, Griddine went two for four with a home run and three RBIs. Cory Krebs hit a home run with two RBIs. Nick Yoder went two for three and Devin Word went two for four with an RBI. In the fourth game, Seth Davenport went three for four hitting for Hesston with two home runs and four RBIs. Griddine drove in three runs. Carrell went two for four with two RBI. King went two for four. Hornbeck and Kerbs each drove in a run. Jordan Gray went six innings for the win, allowing five runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Tyler Bratton pitched the seventh. Hesston trailed 2-0 after two innings, but came back with four runs in the top of the third and never trailed. Shain took the loss. Newell and Fuller finished the game. Daniel Schneider went three for four hitting for the Lions, driving in a run. Ribera and Negron each went two for three with an RBI. Emanuel Sanchez added an RBI. Brown Mackie ends the season 7-22. Hesston improves to 26-16 and advances to the Plains District Championships, which begin May 16 at the Region II (Oklahoma) winner. The Region XVI (Missouri) champion also competes. The district winner advances to the Division II Junior College World Series in Enid, Okla.
