    Halstead splits with Smoky Valley
    LINDSBORG — The Halstead High School baseball team split a doubleheader Tuesday at Smoky Valley in Central Kansas League play. Halstead won the first game 17-7 in six innings on the 10-run rule. Smoky Valley won the nightcap 18-17, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. In the first game, Halstead's Colby Jarrell went the distance, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with eight walks and six strikeouts. Shane VanSteenburg went three for three hitting with three runs scored and three RBIs. Dakota Hoffman went two for three with two RBIs. Blake Beckett and Jerry Black each drove in two runs. Devan Herb went two for three hitting with an RBI. For Smoky Valley, Kevin Smith went four for four hitting with two runs scored. Trevor Menke went two for three with two RBIs. Andy Osner and Trevor Whittaker each drove in two runs. Osner took the loss for Smoky Valley. In the second game, Sean Boston went four for six hitting for Halstead, driving in five runs. Herb went two for three with four RBIs. Hoffman went two for four with three RBIs. Timothy Glassco went two for two with two RBIs. VanSteenburg went three for five with two RBIs. Boston took the loss in the second game. Beckett struck out four in relief. Smith got the win in relief of Whittaker for Smoky Valley. Timothy Ruble went three for five hitting with five RBIs. Osner went two for three with two RBIs. Whittaker went two for three with four runs scored and an RBI. Halstead plays Friday at Hillsboro.

    Moundridge drops two games
    MOUNDRIDGE — The Moundridge Wildcats dropped a pair of games to Inman Tuesday in Heart of America League play. Inman won the first game 16-6 and the second game 7-4. "(In game one,) We had too many errors, walks, HBP, pass balls, wild pitches and not enough timing hits to win," Moundridge coach Lynn Eichelberger said. "(In game two,) Shawn Wadley pitched his tail off. Inman scored the majority of their runs on two-out hits, I give them credit for those timely hits." In the first game, Inman scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to break open a close game. Wyatt Regehr pitched for the win for Inman. Daniel Ratzlaff took the loss for Moundridge. Layne Richert went two for five hitting for Inman with two RBIs. Regehr was two for three with three runs scored and an RBI. Brock Lucas drove in two runs. For Moundridge, Wadley was two for three with an RBI. Ratzlaff was two for four with an RBI. Kyle Huxman was two for two. In the second game, Treyton DeVore went the distance for Inmman, striking out seven. Wadley took the loss for Moundridge, striking out 10. Inman's Taylor Almquist went three for four hitting with two RBIs. DeVore drove in two runs. Blayne Konrade went two for four with an RBI. For Moundridge, Garrett Higgins went three for three hitting with an RBI. Jayden Schmidt drove in two runs. Moundridge hosts Herington Friday.

    Newton JV golfers third, 11th at meet
    The Newton High School junior varsity boys' golf team had two teams entered in the Newton Invitational Tuesday at the Fox Ridge Golf Course. Hutchinson won the meet at 370, followed by Derby at 380 and Newton Black at 381. The Newton gold team finished with a team score of 450. Dakota Soukup of Winfield was top medalist at 83. Newton's sole medalist was Jordyn Stevenson at 85, tying for third.

    SALINA — The Hesston High School golf team finished first, followed by Halstead in second Monday at the Southeast of Saline Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. Hesston had a team score of 313, followed by Hesston at 338 and Ellinwood at 350. There were 12 teams in competition. Hesston's Matt Thayne was top medalist at 74, followed by Halstead's Nathan Gamache in second at 76, Hesston's Matt Steele in third at 78 and Halstead's Cory Armendariz in fourth at 79. Hesston's Brandon Swank was sixth with an 80, followed by teammates Jack Barnhart in seventh at 81 and Titus Ewert in eighth at 82. Taylor Nemeth of Halstead shot an 87. Brendan Gundy and Alex Thibault each shot a 96. Blake Bohling shot a 97.

    Wingnuts sign pitcher Testa
    WICHITA — With spring training opening Saturday, the Wichita Wingnuts signed pitcher Joe Testa Monday. Testa spent last season in the Washington Nationals organization with Class A Adavanced Potomac of the Carolina League and Class AA Harrisburg of the Eastern League. He struck out 37 in 42 2-3 innings last season. He is a six-year pro with an 18-11 record, 12 saves and a 3.36 earned-run-average. He has 286 strikeouts in 265 innings. He played for Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y. He originally signed with the Twins in 2008. Testa is the 28th player under contract going into spring training.

    LAWRENCE — Wichita Wild kicker Alex Fambrough was named Champions Professional Indoor Football League special teams player of the week for week eight. Fambrough was 10 of 11 on PAT kicks, a league record for most PAT kicks in a game. He also hit two field goals. He leads the league in PAT kicks with 41.
