  • NHS softball team sweeps
    SALINA — The Newton High School softball team claimed a sweep over Salina Central Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Salina South High School. Newton won the first game 6-0 and the second game 18-5 in six innings on the 10-run rule. It was the first twinbill sweep of the season for the Railers, who improve to 3-11, 2-6 in AV-CTL I play. Central falls to 1-11, 0-8 in Division I play. Newton pitcher Lauren Regier allowed just four hits in the win. Newton was aided by six Central errors. The Newton defense overcame three errors to hold the Mustangs scoreless. In the second game, Newton took control of the game with eight runs in the second inning. The Railers scored in every inning. Regier was credited with the win in the second game. Newton's offense posted 19 hits in the second game. Newton plays at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Maize.

    Railer baseball team drops game
    SALINA — The Newton High School baseball team outhit Salina Central 12-8, but was outscored 8-5 Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play in Salina. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out. No make-up date has been announced at press time. The game was tied 4-4 after three innings, but Central scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Newton pushed across a run in the top of the seventh. Todd Humiston pitched for the win for Central. J.W. Maldaner hit a home run. Ben Wright took the loss for the Railers. Newton falls to 5-8, 1-6 in AV-CTL I play. Newton plays at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Maize.

    Youth track meet scheduled
    HESSTON — The Hesston High School and Middle School track teams are hosting a youth meet May 11 at the high school track. The meet is open to athletes in Pre-K to sixth grade.
