Scripture: Matthew (NIV) 12:11 He (Jesus) said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?
12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.
13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other.
Observation: What can be read as a question is probably spoken as a statement, not needing or expecting an answer. But it is a thoughtful question in itself. How much more valuable are we than animals.
If the Sabbath laws allow people to rescue their animals, then surely people, who are of much more value than animals, can be rescued also! It is lawful to heal on the Sabbath! Jesus did not use the freedom from the Sabbath laws to serve or entertain himself, but to serve someone else!
Application: I need to see that the freedom I have from keeping the Old Testament laws gives me opportunity to better serve others. Out of appreciation for the One who gave me freedom, I should use it to honor Him.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for freedom your love gives me. In love for you, I want to use that freedom to serve you. Amen
