  • DERBY — The Newton High School boys' golf team finished third Monday at the Derby Invitational at the Derby Country Club. Host Derby won the tournament at 308, followed by Arkansas City at 327 and Newton at 334. There were 10 teams in competition. "The team did a great job today," Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. "We didn't have three of our top golfers, but the other players stepped up and brought home a third-place team finish." Quincy Stith of Derby was top medalist at 75, winning a tie-breaker over teammate Troy Underwood. Newton was led by Cole Rother in fourth at 78, followed by Alex Rickard in seventh at 81 and Jared Gihring in 13th at 84. "Cole hit the ball very well tee to green," Pauls said. "He had an eagle on 17 and a chip-in birdie on 11 that helped him shoot 38 on the back nine. He's improved his mental game as the season has progressed. Alex had his best score of the season and his first individual medal. He had some trouble early in his round putting, but stayed focused and eliminated the big numbers that have been holding him back in earlier meets. Jared also posted his season best and earned his first individual medal. He played very consistent including a birdie on 17." Avery Anderson shot a 91, followed by Conner Mitchell at 94 and D.J. Anderson at 109. "Avery hit the ball well from the tee but didn't have his best short game," Pauls said. "He has the ability to shoot lower if he can get a few more putts to fall. Conner played in his first varsity meet and posted his low score for the season. D.J. had a difficult time from the tee box and had to take quite a few penalty strokes on his round." Newton plays at 1 p.m. today at the Swather Special at the Hesston Golf Course.
