SALINA — The Newton High School boys' golf team claimed a pair of medals in a fourth-place team finish Thursday at the Salina South Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Hays won the team title at 315, winning a sixth-score tiebreaker over Derby. Salina Central was third at 319. Newton had a team score of 323.
Ben Hargrave of Salina South was top medalist at 73. Newton's Dalton Ayers was second at 75. Lane Pauls was 10th at 80.
"Dalton had his best tournament of the season," Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. "He played very consistent today, with nothing worse than a bogey and no 3-putts. He was able to birdie three and 16. He had a chance to get into a playoff for first, but unfortunately bogeyed his last two holes. Lane finished 10th but was disappointed that he was unable to break 80 for the first time this season. He had a bad start going 4 over in his first three holes. He settled down and shot a 38 on the front nine."
Cole Rother finished two strokes out of medal contention at 82. Omar Ramos-Thaw shot an 86. Jared Gihring and Alex Richard each shot an 89.
"Cole hit the ball very well tee to green," Joanie Pauls said. "He had a stretch early in his round where four consecutive 3-putt greens held him back. He played much better after he got comfortable with the speed of the greens and was able to shoot eight strokes lower than our previous meet at Salina. Omar played good in spurts but couldn't string together enough pars to shoot his season average. Jared started off slow, with two double bogeys in his first four holes. He is usually a good iron player but had some trouble hitting greens in regulation. His play on the par 5's helped him keep his score in the 80s. Alex played great for the majority of his round, but had two holes where he went 8 over. He should be able to start shooting in the low 80s as soon as he can learn to avoid a big number during his round. The team was a little rusty today."
Newton competes Thursday at the Hesston Invitational.
