  • The Bethel College softball team went 1-3 for the weekend in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Saturday at Kelsch Field, the Threshers dropped a pair of games to Bethany, losing the first game 3-1 and the second game 12-2 in five innings on the eight-run rule.
Sunday, Bethel went to Winfield for a make-up twinbill with Southwestern. The Moundbuilders won the first 9-8. Bethel won the nightcap 4-1.
Bethel is 4-21, 3-11 in KCAC play. The Threshers are in eighth place in the conference with four games remaining. The top eight advance to the KCAC post-season tournament at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.
"We had a few too many errors today," Bethel coach Stacy Middleton said of Saturday's games. "I was very pleased with our first game. We only gave up one hit. Then we had a pitching mishap that scored their runs. That should have been a tie game. Our defense was very good behind Kelly (Toll). (Bethany's) Jenny (Garcia) is a fantastic pitcher. I think she leads the conference in strikeouts. She's good. I'll give her that. I'm glad that she graduates. I was proud of our seniors today. They stepped up."
Bethel honored its first-ever senior class at the game -- first baseman Lauren Franz and outfielder Becca Bradley. The team is in its second year of play.
Bethel took the lead in the first inning of Saturday's first game when Kylee Gragg drew a walk and scored on a Mary Sheridan double. Bethany scored a pair of runs in the third inning, adding a run in the fourth.
Garcia, 12-6, allowed a run on one hit with a walk and 12 strikeouts. Toll, 0-5, allowed no earned runs on eight hits with four walks and no strikeouts. Brittany Lewis went two for three hitting for Bethany. Nicole Felker went two for four.
In the second game, Bethel held Bethany in check for the first three inning. The Swedes sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth, scoring 10 runs. Kelli Traffas hit two home runs in the inning, a three-run shot and a four-run shot.
The Swedes added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Bethel came back with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Victoria Roberts hit an RBI double. Bradley had an RBI single.
Bethany's Camille McIver, 7-3, allowed five hits with two strikeouts for the win. Bethel's Chelsea Grandstaff, 1-4, took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits. Lakin Thompson finished the game for Bethel, allowing an earned run on two hits.
Felker finished the game with two RBIs. McIver went two for three hitting.
Bethany improves to 26-14, 12-4 in KCAC play. The Swedes are tied with Kansas Wesleyan for second place in the conference.
