  • Railer tennis team wins tourney

  • VALLEY CENTER -- The Newton High School boys' tennis team won the 11-team Valley Center Invitational Saturday.
    Newton scored 38 points, followed by Pittsburg with 29 and Valley Center Purple with 27.
    "We took first place and had a great day," Newton coach Nick Sisson said. "The boys played very well and are looking good with league next Monday. Very proud of our team."
    At first singles, Newton's Yannick Rave finished second, falling in the finals to Matt Dolezal of Valley Center 8-3.
    At second singles, Adam Ford finished 3-0 to win, downing Arian Mcafee of Pittsburg 8-2 in the finals.
    At first doubles, Josh Carlgren and Riley Kingsley finished 3-0, stopping Jake Creech and Logan Benham in the finals 8-1.
    At second doubles, Nick Carlson and Preston Ford finished 3-0, stopping Shawn Bontrager and Michah Harshman 8-5 in the finals.
    Newton ends the regular season at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships in Maize.
