  • The way things are going for the Newton High School girls’ soccer team, the Railers could line up against Real Madrid or Manchester United and would only lose by one goal. The Railers fell to Salina Central 2-1 Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Fischer Field. The loss sets the Railers back to 2-7-1. Newton drops its sixth straight game. Five of those losses were by one goal. “It’s building that experience for the post season,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “They had the wind in the first half, and they were throwing numbers. We had to make our adjustments. Chloe (Woodward) and Ashley Akers did a good job of closing down that space. They helped out in front of our defense and broke their rhythm. In the second half, I told our girls our goal was to draw even. We did that. I was pleased with how we were able to come back. We played a very good second half against a quality squad.” Devon Schmitz opened the scoring for Central with a goal on a corner kick. Newton came back with a goal in the 65th minute by Katelyn Zinn. Sara Ingrassia scored the game winner with 4:49 remaining in regulation. Newton was outshot 7-5. Kelsi Langley had five saves in goal for the Railers. After three games in five days, the Railers get a week off, hosting Derby at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. “We play another pair of quality squads next week,” Jantzi said. “We host Derby and then we play at Maize.”
