  • Lack of offense and five errors led the Newton High School baseball team to a 5-4 loss to Derby Tuesday in a make up of an earlier rain out at Klein-Scott Field. Newton held Derby to just three hits, but five errors led to the Railers’ undoing. “You give teams extra outs on a cold night like tonight,” Newton coach Mark George said. “We had more errors than they had hits. I’m awfully disappointed. We didn’t do a very good job of protecting the baseball. We let another game slip away to a team I think we should be able to compete with. It was another one-run loss.” Derby opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second without a hit. Derby got runners on base with a leadoff walk and a strikeout-wild pitch. A delayed double steal scored the first run. A pair of ground outs scored the second run. Newton came back with runs in the third and fourth inning to tie the game, but Derby replied with two runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth. Newton came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but went down in order in the seventh. Derek Newcome posted the win for Derby, striking out seven in five innings. Jack Halloran finished the game for the save. Austin Gronau took the loss for Newton, despite allowing just one earned run and striking out five. Ben Wright finished the game, striking out two. Newton’s Austin Resser went two for three hitting, the only player in the game with more than one hit. “Right now, we’re an average ballclub and average ballclubs can’t make those kinds of mistakes,” George said. “We have the potential to be a better ballclub. We’re still not doing a good enough job at the plate. We’re still not attacking fastballs. You can’t have the heart of your lineup watching first-pitch fastballs with guys on base. I thought the bottom of our lineup did an excellent job of getting on base.” Derby improves to 3-3, 2-2 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play. Newton falls to 4-6, 0-4 in AV-CTL I play. Newton plays at 4 p.m. Friday at Campus.
