It’s starting to become a broken record for the Newton High School girls’ soccer team — a terse defense, but little success on offense. The record was stuck Monday in a 1-0 loss to Andover Central in non-league play at Fischer Field. Newton falls to 2-6-1, losing its fifth straight game. Four of the losses in the streak were by one goal. It was Newton’s fifth one-goal loss overall. “We played really well I thought,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We connected some passes. We created some opportunities up top. We just weren’t able to finish. I’m very proud of the girls to come back after a tough loss the other night and organize themselves.” Central, 4-2-2, scored in the 67th minute on a shot by Maddi Zimmer from about 12 yards out. Central outshot Newton 7-4, taking all seven shots in the second half. Newton keeper Kelsi Langley had six saves in goal. Central keeper Evan Stamp had three saves. Newton missed an open goal chance in the 27th minute. Neither team had a shot on goal in the first half. Langley stopped a one-versus-goal chance early in the second half. Newton missed a one-versus-goal chance in the 59th minute. Newton created several chances to equalize after the Central goal, but the shots were either off target or no shot was taken. A late Ardys Woodward free kick was stopped. Newton takes on Salina Central at 6:30 p.m. today at Fischer Field. “We take on another quality squad,” Jantzi said. “Hopefully, we’ll have another good effort and be on the other end of a one-goal win.”
