  • McPHERSON — Even with a generous gift, the Newton High School girls’ soccer team couldn’t mount enough offense against the McPherson Bullpups in a 2-1 overtime loss Friday night at McPherson Stadium. Trailing 1-0, McPherson misplayed a defensive pass that went between the legs of at least one Bullpup defennder as well as the goalkeeper for an own goal in the 73rd minute that sent the game into extra time. Colleen O’Connor took a ball off a Railer defender and put it in from about 10 yards out for the game-winner. “They have good, skilled, fast players,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We put together some good passes. We had our opportunities. We just didn’t score on them. They get a corner kick. We forget to cover the backside and give up an early goal. We put some pressure on their backs in the second half, and that forced them to score an own goal. Unfortunately, we got spread out of defense in overtime. O’Connor is one of their key players. We give her that kind of time and space, she’s going to put it in the back of the net.” McPherson improves to 2-4-1. Newton falls to 2-5-1. The Railers kept McPherson contained for most of the first half. Newton missed a pair of one-versus-goalkeeper chances. McPherson scored in the 33rd minute when Haley Ruder headed in a O’Conner corner kick. Both teams missed scoring opportunities early in the second half. Midfielder Logan Porter went down with an injury with 2:55 remaining in regulation. “Logan being out is going to be a tough loss,” Jantzi said. “We already have (Hannah) Yoder out. Katelyn Zinn was out with an illness. We’re already missing two key players. We battled. I hate to lose to Mac because it is such a fierce rivalry.” Newton hosts back-to-back games against strong opponents at the start of the week, hosing Andover Central at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Salina Central at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fischer Field. Andover Central is ranked fifth in the KSCA Class 5A Southwest Region. “We face two more quality squads,” Jantzi said. “We’ll have to figure out what to do adjustment-wise and position-wise.
