    GODDARD — The Newton High School girls’ soccer team dropped its third straight game, falling to Godddard 2-1 Tuesday in Goddard.?The game was tied 0-0 at the half.?Kendra Young scored a goal with an assist for Goddard. Sydne Harpenau added a goal. Makenzie Klaassen added an assist.?Katelyn Zinn scored for Newton.?The Railers fall to 2-4-1 and plays at 7:15 p.m. Friday at McPherson.

    NHS baseball?team falls

    The Newton High School baseball team fell to Derby 6-5 Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Klein-Scott Field.?Game statistics were not reported at press time.?The second game of the doubleheader was rained out, and will be played at 6 p.m. April 16.?The junior varsity game will precede the varsity game at 4 p.m.?Newton falls to 3-4, 0-3 in AV-CTL I play. Newton plays at 4 p.m. Friday at Andover.

    C-team baseball?rescheduled

    The Newton High School C-team baseball doubleheader scheduled for today at Maize South has been rescheduled for April 29.

    Halstead drops?games to Lyons

    HALSTEAD — The Halstead High School baseball team dropped a pair of games to Lyons Tuesday in Central Kansas League play in Halstead.?Halstead lost the first game 12-1 in five innings on the 10-run rule. Halstead lost the second game 10-0.?In the first game, Cole Brady pitched for the win for Lyons, striking out six. Jacob Buckman was two for four hitting with four RBIs. Ryan McClure was two for four with two RBIs.?Sean Boston took the loss for Halstead. Coby Jarrell went two for two hitting. Dakota Hoffman drove in a run.?In the second game, Lyons pitcher McClure threw 3 2-3 innings, striking out eight. Grady Kirkhart went three innings, striking out two. Brady went four for four hitting with an RBI. Kirkhart went three for four with three RBIs. Mitchell Vincent went two for three with two RBIs.?Jarrell took the loss for Halstead, striking out four. Shane VanSteenburg went two for three hitting.?Halstead falls to 2-6 and hosts Kingman Friday.

    Burrton senior?signs with Bethany

    LINDSBORG — Burrton High School senior Thomas Seymour signed a letter of intent to play football at Bethany College beginning this fall.?Seymour was an offensive lineman for the Chargers, earning second-team all-district honors. He also played baseball in the summer as a catcher. He intends to major in sports management.

    Wingnuts pitcher?announces retirement

    WICHITA — Wichita Wingnuts pitcher Jared Simon announced his retirement after six seasons of professional play.?He leads the Wingnuts in career games pitched at 104. He set a league record of appearances in a season at 57. He is a Wichita State grad.?Simon is a pitching coach at Maize South High School.
