The Newton High School softball team dropped a pair of games to Derby on a drizzly Tuesday at Kelsch Field.?Newton lost the first game 17-1 in three innings on the 15-run rule. Newton dropped the second game 22-11.?“I’m really impressed how we put some hits together and got some runs in the second game,” Newton coach Kirsten Horton said. “We still need to work on the defensive side of things to stop other teams from doing the same thing. We made some hits tonight. We just need to play defense. ... We’re making progress. I’m pretty proud of how it went.”?In the first game, Newton was held to one hit. Derby scored eight runs in the second inning to break the game open. Lauren Regier took the loss for Newton. Ashlynn Godown pitched for the win. Carly Gum had four hits for Derby. Kennedy Long, Britney Wimberly and Kelly Mason each had two hits.?In the second game, Derby broke open the game with a 13-run third inning. Taylor Goerend took the loss for Newton. Gum pitched the win for Derby.?Taylor Burns and Jessica Motes each had three hits for Newton. Tori Miller, Wimberly and Mason each had four hits for Derby. Jessica Egan added three hits.?Newton is 0-8 overall, 0-4 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play. Derby is 2-0 overall and in the division. Newton plays Wichita North and Andover in a triangular, which begins at 2 p.m. Friday at Andover.?“I’m hoping we’ll do better Friday,” Horton said. Unfortunately, the weather hates us, so we might be indoors the next couple of days. We’ll see what we can do. We can get hitting done inside. It’s hard to work on defense.”
