ARKANSAS CITY — The Newton High School boys’ tennis team placed second Monday at the 16-team Arkansas City Invitational.?Andover downed Newton 128-101. Winfield was third, followed by Salina Central and Independence.?“Very pleased with our result today,” Newton coach Nick Sisson said. “The boys did a great job of stepping up and taking advantage of this large tournament. This is the highest we have ever finished here as a team.”?Newton was led by the doubles team of Riley Kingsley and Josh Carlgren, who reached the finals, losing to Gavin Webster and Tyler Posch of Independence, the defending Class 4A state champions, 8-6. Kingsley and Carlgren avenged a loss from the Newton Invitational with a win over a team from Hutchinson 8-3.?Preston Ford and Nat Dick finished 18th at 3-2.?In singles play, Yannick Rave finished sixth at 3-2. Adam Ford took 15th at 2-3.?Newton competes at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Hutchinson Invitational at the Fairgrounds Tennis Center.
