The Newton High School softball team is still struggling with stopping the big inning, dropping a pair of games to Salina South Friday night at Kelsch Field to open Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play.?South won the first game 14-2 and the second game 15-1. Both games were called after five innings on the 10-run rule.?In the first game, South scored in every innings. In the second game, South scored 14 runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 game.?“We have a five-inning problem,” Newton coach Kirsrten Horton said. “We have a lot of games where we give up big innings in the fourth or fifth inning, and we need to get past that.”?In the fifth inning of the second game, Newton gave up 14 runs on 12 hits with a pair of errors. Most of the hits were infield singles or bunts. Cadie O’Donnell did hit a grand slam home run.?“We’ve worked on the bunt,” Horton said. “We’ve worked on those situations. We tried to prepare for them. When you see it happening, you have to get it moving.”?In the first game, South scored in every innings. A six-run second inning broke the game open. Newton scored a run in the second inning and another in the fifth.?Hailey Chapman pitched for the win. Morgan Bryant had three hits for South. O’Donnell, Kristen Kirk, Carlie Olson, Saige Otter and Kaci Isaacson had two hits each.?Lauren Regier took the loss for Newton. Taylor Goerend finished the game. Alexis Southern had two hits.?“We tried in that second game, but we just couldn’t put hits together,” Horton said. “When we got hits, they weren’t back-to-back.”?In the second game, Newton scored a run in the bottom of the first. South tied the game in the top of the fourth.?Breanna Hogan tossed a two-hitter for South, striking out six. Goerend took the loss for Newton. Kirk, Otter and Lexi Gasper each had three hits. Bryant and O’Donnell each had two hits.?South improves to 4-2, 4-0 in AV-CTL I play. Newton falls to 0-6, 0-4 in division play. Newton plays Tuesday at home against to Derby.?“Hopefully we can work on some things,” Horton said. “I hope we can come back a more prepped team.”
