  • McPHERSON — The Newton High School boys’ golf team placed sixth out of 13 teams Thursday at the McPherson Invitational at the Turkey Creek Golf Course.?Hutchinson won the team title at 318, followed by Buhler at 323 and Arkansas City at 324. Newton had a team score of 329.?“As a team we had too many big numbers on holes,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “We’ve missed quite a few practices due to the weather and it showed some today. Our team score was 20 strokes higher than last year. I expect our consistency to improve as we are able to get some more rounds in.”?Newton was led by Lane Pauls, who finished in sixth at 76. Dalton Ayers finished 15th at 81. Coth Rother and Omar Ramos-Thaw each shot an 86. Avery Anderson shot an 89. Alex Rickard shot a 97.?“Lane started well on the front nine, including a birdie on three, but took a double bogey on the ninth, a par five, when his 2nd shot went left and long and ended up kicking into the water behind the green,” Joanie Pauls said. “He was able to regroup and parred the next six holes. He bogeyed 16 and 17, but birdied 18 to shoot 36 on the back nine. Dalton (81) played his first 13 holes in 3 over, including a birdie on 4. He had some trouble with his tee shots coming in and went 8 over on his last five holes.?“Dalton parred the first handicap hole (the fifth) to win a scorecard playoff for the 15th medal. Cole (86) putted well on the day with 30 putts for his round. He had some difficulty with a few of his tee shots and it cost him some penalty strokes. Omar (86) had a shaky start, double bogeying his first 3 holes. He recovered well and posted a 40 on the back nine, including a birdie on 17. Avery and Alex both playing in their first varsity competition. Avery (89) was a little inconsistent. He had 6 pars in his round but also had some holes he struggled on. Alex couldn’t seem to get comfortable on the tee box today. Alex had some good holes, but seven penalties and a tough day putting drove his score up.”?Newton plays today at the Salina Central Invitational, a make-up of an earlier rain out.
