The Newton High School softball team was swept by Valley Center Tuesday in non-league play at Kelsch Field.?Newton lost 11-2 and 16-4. Stats were not reported at press time.?Newton falls to 0-4 and hosts Salina South at 4 p.m. Friday to open Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play.

Halstead drops?two games

WICHITA — The Halstead High School baseball team dropped a pair of non-league games to Wichita Independent Tuesday in Wichita.?The Dragons lost the first game 13-0 in five inning and the second game 10-0 in six innings.?In the first game, Independent pitcher Scott Spiker went three innings for the win, allowing one hit and five strikeouts.?Kevin Jarvis went three for three hitting with two runs scored and four RBIs. Garrett Hupman went three for three with three runs scored and two RBIs.?Joseph Stovall took the loss for Halstead. Zachary Wright finished the game. Stovall was two for two hitting.?In the second game, Michael Kay went five innings for the win, striking out four. Tanner Cairns finished the game.?Kay went two for four hitting with three RBIs. Karson Rowe drove in two runs.?Stovall and Shane VanSteenburg each went two for three hitting for Halstead. Stovall took the loss.?Halstead is 0-4 and hosts Haven at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Moss takes?CPIFL honors

LAWRENCE — Wichita Wild defensive lineman Matt Moss was named the Champions Professional Indoor Football League player of the week for the week ending Sunday.?In Wichita’s win over the Bloomington Edge, Moss posted six tackles, including three sacks. Moss has 7.5 sacks for the season, second in the league.?It was the second straight week a Wichita player took the league defensive honors. Bethel grad James McCartney was player of the week last week.?Clinton Solomon of Kansas City was named offensive player of the week. Solomon is a former Wichita Wild player.?Courtney Grixby of Lincoln was named the special teams player of the week.

Thunder sweeps?playoff series

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. — The Wichita Thunder swept its Central Hockey League playoff quarterfinal series against the Arizona Sundogs, winning 4-3 in overtime Wednesday in Prescott Valley.?Three of the Thunder’s four wins over Arizona came in overtime. Les Reaney scored the game winner 4:13 into overtime on a power play.?Wichita was three of seven in power play attempts. Arizona was two of six.?Greger Hanson scored two goals to lead Wichita. Kevin Young scored a goal with two assists. Chad Painchaud added two assists. R.G. Flath, Andrew Martens and Matt Robinson each added an assist.?Johan Ryd scored two goals for Arizona. Cody Purves added a goal with an assist. Mario Laroque had two assists. Ron Meyers and Kip Brennen each added an assist.?Torrie Jung picked up his fourth win of the playoffs for Wichita, stopping 27 of 30 Arizona shots on goal.
