  • Newton seniors sign with Tabor

  • HILLSBORO — Tabor College football coach Mike Gardner signed a pair of Newton High School seniors to play for the Bluejays this fall.?Signed were Derrick Garnica and Jacob Wright.?Garnica is a 5-foot-11, 189-pound fullback for the Railers. As a senior, he rushed for 872 yards on 199 carries for 13 touchdowns. He caught 10 passes for 131 yards.?“Derrick is a great player who has been flying under the radar,” Gardner said. “He shows signs of great potential and we are expecting good things from him in the future.”?Wright is a 5-10, 180-pound defensive back. He is a two-time All-Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division I selection. He was named the team’s defensive player of the year as both a junior and senior.?“Jacob is a wonderful student athlete, who we look forward to having on our team,” Gardner said. “His athleticism and intelligence will allow him to add immediate depth to our defensive secondary next season.”?Wright is a four-year honor roll selection.?Wright and Garnica led Newton to a 3-6 record last year.?Tabor was 8-2 last season, 7-1 in KCAC. The Bluejays finished 18th in the NAIA post-season poll.
