  • Threshers struggle against Ottawa

  • The Bethel College softball team struggled on defense in its first game of a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill against the Ottawa Braves Wednesday at Kelsch Field.?The Threshers solved its defensive woes in the second game, but struggled on offense in the second game. Bethel fell 20-2 in the first game and 8-0 in the second game. The first game was called after five innings. The second game was called after six innings.?Bethel gave up nine unearned runs in the first game. All but three runs were scored with two outs.?“We played much better in the second game,” Bethel coach Stacy Middleton said. “I gave them a goal to allow no more than two batters with two outs. We did that. We’re struggling to score. Little by little, we’re getting better. We have great moments. We just need to keep building on them. We’re young. We have growing pains. We just need to keep working.”?In the first game, Ottawa jumped to a 5-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings. The Braves scored a run after two two-out errors in the first inning. Ottawa used three two-out singles to score in the second inning. Lydia Budke hit a three-run home run in the third inning.?Bethel used three walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches to score two runs in the bottom of the third inning.?Four two-out hits in the top of the fourth led to seven Ottawa runs. Alyssa Miller had a three-run shot in the inning. Ottawa added eight unearned runs with two outs in the top of the fifth.?Amanda Martinsen, Budke, Taylor Heffern and Miller each had two hits for Ottawa. Budke drove in four runs. Morgan Beckler pitched four innings for the win.?Rachel Unruh took the loss for Bethel. Kelly Toll also pitched.?Bethel held Ottawa scoreless in the first inning of the second game. The Braves used three hits in the second inning to score two runs. Ottawa added three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth inning.?Budke and Cady Blevins each went three for four hitting for Ottawa. Martensen went two for four. Morgan Shramek pitched the complete-game win, allowing two hits, a walk and six strikeouts.?Lakin Thompson took the loss for Bethel, allowing 11 hits, two walks and three strikeouts.?Ottawa improves to 15-8, 2-2 in KCAC play. Bethel falls to 1-14, 0-4 in KCAC play. Bethel faces KCAC co-leader Kansas Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Saturday in Salina. The Coyotes received votes in the NAIA top 25. Bethel returns home at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Sterling at Centennial Park. An earlier rain out against McPherson has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. April 11 at Kelsch Field.
