  • The Newton High School baseball team used some pitching prowess to claim a sweep of Valley Center Tuesday in non-league play at Klein-Scott Field.?Newton won the first game 4-3 in nine innings and the second game 7-0.?“We got off to a shaky start in the first game,” Newton coach Mark George said. “Wyatt Burbrink made his first varsity start. He settled down after the first inning to throw 58 strikes and 16 balls. He dictated the tempo and gave us a chance to win. Ben Wright got the job done the rest of the way for the win. He went a little longer than we wanted him to, but we did what we had to do for the win.”?Dakota Long had two hits for the Railers, a single and a double.?Valley Center struck with two runs in the top of the first. Newton came back with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. The Hornets regained the lead with a run in the top of the ninth.?In the bottom of the ninth, the Railers came back with two runs. The second was scored when Dylan Palmer grounded into an error. Austin Gronau had a key hit in the inning and scored a run.?In the second game, Keil Stauffer went seven innings, allowing three hits, a walk and 13 strikeouts for the shutout win. Austin Resser and Long each had two hits. Newton led 5-0 after three innings and added two more runs in the sixth.?“Keil Stauffer threw one of his best games,” George said. “He threw four pitches for strikes. He definitey did his job. He had the defense behind him. We did a better job at the plate. Some guys who didn’t contribute at the plate made plays on defense.?“We still have a lot of things we need to work on, but we’re heading in the right direction.”?Newton is 3-1 and hosts Salina South at 4 p.m. Friday to open Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play.?“Salina South will be a good test for us,” George said. “They are a very experienced team. We have to be able to improve from one game to the next.”
