The Newton High School varsity boys’ golf meet scheduled for Monday at Salina Central (Salina Municipal Golf Course) has been postponed until Friday.

Bethel freshman?takes honors

WICHITA — Bethel College freshman Breanna Horner was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis player of the week for the week ending Sunday.?Horner, from Shawnee, was 4-0 for the week in singles and doubles play. She is 6-1 this season and ranked 44th on the NAIA-ITA National Singles Rankings.

Sedgwick sweeps?Sunrise Christian

WICHITA — The Sedgwick Cardinal baseball team opened the season with a sweep of Sunrise Christian Academy Thursday in Wichita.?Sedgwick won the first game 10-1 and the second game 14-0.?In the first game, Sedgwick pitcher Trey Tucker faced just 14 batters, allowing an unearned run on one hit with two walks and seven strikeouts. Sedgwick had just five hits. Logan Thompson went two for two hitting with three runs scored and two RBIs. Greer Chandler also drove in two runs.?In the second game, Thompson went the distance, allowing one hit with two walks and 12 strikeouts, facing 18 batters. Tucker was two for three hitting with four RBIs. Chanz McCune went two for three with three RBIs. Brylie Ware went three for four with an RBI. Drake Standefer went two for three.?Sedgwick, 2-0, opens Heart of America League play at 4:30 p.m. today at Moundridge.

Royals fall?in opener

CHICAGO — Chris Sale scattered seven hits over 7 2-3 innings as the Chicago White Sox edged the Kansas City Royals 1-0 Monday in the Royals’ season opener.?Sale walked one and struck out seven.?James Shields took the loss for Kansas City, allowing eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings. The only hit against Shields that cost him was a Tyler Flowers solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.?Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez both went two for three hitting for the White Sox. Alcides Escobar and Jeff Francoeur each went two for four for the Royals. Kansas City left eight runners on base.?Addison Reed pitched the bottom of the seventh for the save, walking one and striking out one.?The two teams meet again on Wednesday.
