EMPORIA — The Newton High School boys’ tennis team finished second Thursday at the five-team Emporia Invitational.?The tournament was a modified team round-robin with two singles flights and two doubles flights. Blue Valley West finished the tournament 4-0, followed by Newton at 3-1, Derby at 2-2, Blue Valley Southwest at 1-3 and host Emporia at 0-4.?Newton lost to Blue Valley West 3-1, but beat Derby 3-1, Blue Valley Southwest 4-0 and Emporia 4-0.?Newton was led at second doubles by Adam Ford, who finished 4-0.?Riley Kingsley and Josh Carlgren finished 3-1 at first doubles. Preston Ford and Shawn Bontrager finished 3-1 at second doubles. Both doubles teams took second.?Yannick Rave took third at first singles with a 2-2 record.?“(I was) very happy with our play today,” Newton coach Nick Sisson said. “(We) showed much improvement in only two days.”?Newton competes Tuesday at the Arkansas City Invitational.
