  • McPHERSON — The Newton High School girls’ soccer team gave up a goal with a half second remaining in regulation to fall to Hays 1-0 Thursday in the semifinals of the McPherson Invitational.?Newton, 1-1-1, plays either Maize South of Andover Central at 4 p.m. Saturday in the third-place game. Hays, 3-0, plays in the finals at 6 p.m.?“The ladies played tough and battled against a ranked Hays squad,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “The result is not what we were looking for, but we saw some good things on the field. Our defense played solidly and held them to three shots. Unfortunately, Hays was able to score with .05 left on the clock. It was a heartbreaker for the ladies, but we will use this as motivation for future matches. As a coach, I am so proud of these ladies. Taylor Edson and Logan Porter played well in the middle not allowing Hays to attack our defense.”?The Railers were shut out for the first time this season.
