Prairie View celebrates National Social Work Month
Prairie View is excited to be one of the many organizations to say “thank you” to social workers as part of National Social Work Month.
Social workers are the most common contact for millions of people with mental illness and addictions. There are currently 6,357 licensed social workers in the state of Kansas. Prairie View employs 38 of them. Across the country, social workers are the largest group of mental health providers, employed in more than 50 different fields of practice.
“Social workers are researchers, community organizers, data analyzers and testify at public hearings. Social works’ political action committee works to improve laws and policies surrounding the health of all,” said Barbara Walker, a licensed clinical social worker and licensed clinical addictions counselor at Prairie View.
Social workers also meet the needs of the elderly in nursing facilities, ensuring the patient’s health-care needs are met through nutrition, as well as communicating with family and health-care professionals.
March was chosen to celebrate social work in 1984. A number of social workers throughout history were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, including Jane Addams in 1931, Mother Teresa in 1979 and Leymah Gbowe in 2011. All were recognized for their achievements of civil and human rights advances.
