Life Enrichment at Bethel College is especially for adults age 60 and older. The program takes place in Krehbiel Auditorium in the Fine Arts Center on campus.
The sessions for April 3 are as follows:
- 9:30 a.m. "Tibet: Land of Sun, Solitude, Snow Leopards," Jim Goering, North Newton.
- 10:30 a.m. "Kansas Flour Sacks: History on a Piece of Cloth," Nancy Jo Leachman, Kansas explorer, Salina.
Nancy Jo Leachman has been a reference librarian for 38 years,?receiving her MSLS in 1975 from the University of North Carolina. Her family moved a lot when she was young, mostly in the northeastern United States. Part of each summer was spent in her mother’s hometown of Lucas, resulting in the feeling that Kansas was more “home” than states where she lived. She lives and works in Salina but has a vacation home in Lucas for when she needs to get out of the big city.
She started collecting flour sacks about 14 years ago. First?attracted by their artwork, she found flour sacks came to embody many aspects of Kansas and U.S. history, such as agriculture, art, marketing, nutrition and politics.
A fascinating collection of more than 100 Kansas flour sacks are used?as a vehicle to learn about the Depression era, especially in Kansas. PowerPoint slides are augmented by several actual sacks for personal examination. The collection is predominantly from the 1920s through the 1940s. These are not calico fabric sacks, but are printed with the name, location and logo of the mill. They are like mini-billboards of their time, expressing political views, advertising trends, marketing schemes, cultural themes, nutrition advancement and more. The audience will be given time to ask questions and share their own stories.
11:40 a.m. "Changes in the Nursing Department," Phyllis Miller, department chair, Bethel College.
Coffee break will be from 10:10 to 10:30 a.m. Donations are accepted to cover the cost. Lunch is served in Schultz Center Dining Hall. Purchase tickets for lunch by 10:35 a.m. Cost: $5.50 for full meal; $3.50 for soup/salad/dessert.
