Anna Mae (Lenke) Starks, daughter of William and Henrietta Daub Newman, was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Chase County, near the town of Cottonwood Falls. She departed this life on March 23, 2013, at Bethesda Home in Goessel, at the age of 96 years.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She married Burley H. Starks on July 25, 1968, in Missouri. He preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1987.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Patricia Lenke Thoman; a grandson, Brian Miller; sisters, Elnora LaGree and Doris Newman; and a brother, Harold Newman.
Mae is survived by a son, John Lenke of the home; daughters, Alice Kay Miller, Halicia Motter and husband Leland; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Newman of California; and many nieces and nephews.
She was born and raised in the Flint Hills of Kansas. She enjoyed the outdoors and working with her flowers. She also enjoyed feeding birds, squirrels and rabbits and watching their antics. She was an immaculate housekeeper and a devoted homemaker and enjoyed making ceramics and other crafts.
Mae will be remembered as a wonderful room mother and cub scout leader. She attended Little League baseball games and other sporting events of her son and grandchildren.
Mae was an Avon lady for many years and later worked at Moffatt’s Jewelry store and Lois’ Style Shop in Newton. She enjoyed serving the public.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, March 27, at 2 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 26, from 2 to 9 p.m. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.
Memorials may be given to the East Side United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.
