The best way to center a hinge screw hole is with a self-centering bit. But if you don’t have one (or can’t find yours), try this tip from Gary Derzinski of Leavenworth, Kansas. Use the hinge’s screw holes as guides for a small countersink bit. Position the hinge, then bore carefully with the countersink until it just touches the sides of the hinge screw hole. The bottom point of the bored countersink should be the precise center of the screw hole. Then, use that spot as the center point for boring the pilot hole.
