The Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts dance department is performing for a cause: collecting non-perishable food items for the hungry.
Three event highlights
1) Support the arts and those in need?BCAPA is sponsoring a food drive for the Hesston Resource Center's food bank. They will have a charity performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Hesston High School, 200 N. Ridge Road in Hesston. Admission is free to the show with one or more non-perishable food items. Guest artists Angel Feet Ministries from Angel Feet Dance Studio in Moundridge will join BCAPA for the performance.
2) Giving back?Danika Bielek, artistic director at Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts, said the inspiration for the event came from a previous partnership with Mennonite Central Committee to support a school in Palestine through a “Global Arts Charity Concert." She said while it's good to support those in need overseas, it's also important to give to those in need who are close to home. "That got us thinking about it," she said. "It just kind of evolved into realizing we've got a lot of families who can't make ends meet." She hopes the project will inspire her students to keep using their artistic talents to help others. "Our goal is not only to teach students to create art ... but also to think of ways their art can help the world and their community," she said.
3) Feeding the hungry? If you are unable to attend the performance on March 9, you can drop off your food items in the lobby at BCAPA, 123 E. Broadway, from March 4-13. The school is open between 4 and 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. BCAPA chose to do the food drive in spring, rather than during the holidays, when there's more of a focus on donating food to the hungry. "People still need to eat in March and April," Bielek said. The group plans to conduct a similar food drive in Newton in the future.
